If you're a heat lover, then this fiery chili powder mix is the one for you! Using a blend of searing hot habanero peppers and tasty spices, it can be made in just minutes and will add complex yet subtle flavours to your dishes. I've added nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon as these will help dial down the heat a little.
Note: If you have them available, use as many whole ingredients as you can. If it is more convenient, simply use pre-ground powders and reduce the amount the recipe requires by half. So instead of 2 tablespoons of coriander seeds you would use 1 tablespoon pre-ground coriander. Reduce any others you don't have whole by half.
What You'll Need: (makes about 11-12 tablespoons)
8-10 dried habanero peppers (or other hot variety)
OR 6 tbsp hot chili flakes
2 tbsp hot Hungarian paprika (or regular)
2 tbsp coriander seeds
1 tbsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp black peppercorns
2-3 tsp mustard powder
2 tsp sumac
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp grated nutmeg
1 x 3 inch piece cinnamon
2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cloves
tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon
Directions:
Note: For this recipe, and for adding even more flavour, you could dry toast the cloves, coriander, peppercorns and cumin seeds before grinding and mixing with the other ingredients. Click here to read more on toasting and grinding. (Link opens in new window)
