For adding authentic flavours to your cooking, a homemade Chinese 5 spice powder is just the thing! Using the five traditional ingredients that have been used in China for centuries, this super versatile recipe literally takes minutes to make and will flavour your dishes to perfection. (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my recipes)
What You'll Need: (makes about 7-8 tablespoon)
4 star anise
1 tbsp fennel seed
4 tsp peppercorns
1 tsp whole cloves
3 inch piece of cinnamon
tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon
Directions:
That's all there is to it!
Store your 5 spice in a cool place in an airtight container and out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months before making a fresh amount.
Note: To intensify the spices flavours, dry toasting the cinnamon and star anise pieces along with the fennel seeds, peppercorns and cloves prior to cooling and grinding is recommended. Read more about toasting and grinding ingredients. (Link opens in new window)
Ingredient Note: I use whole ingredients for this five spice, however, if you don't have them whole simply use pre-ground powders and reduce the amounts by half. For example, instead of 4 teaspoons of peppercorns you would use 2 teaspoons of pre-ground pepper. Reduce any others you don't have whole by half as well and stir in with the other powders when making. Click here for a version that uses only pre-ground ingredients. (Link opens in new window)
