Homemade Barbecue Sauce - Packed With Flavour,
Perfect For Dipping or Coating Your Meat

If you often buy BBQ sauce, why not just have a go at a making your own homemade barbecue sauce? Once you have a few basic ingredients, it's super simple to do and will far exceed in taste any commercial sauce. A blend of tomato sauce/ketchup and dried herbs and spices that can be made in minutes thatcan be used as a dip or coated on your meat. (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my recipes)

What You'll Need:
 (makes about
 cups)

Tomato ketchup/sauce (i used about 500ml)
3 tbsp worcester sauce (or worcestershire or soy)
2 tbsp cider vinegar
1-2 tbsp molasses (or brown sugar)
2 tbsp dried basil
2 tbsp smoked paprika (or any paprika)
2 tbsp butter or oil (for frying)
1 tbsp chili powder (hot or mild)
2 tsp mustard powder
2 tsp ginger powder
1 small onion finely chopped
Salt (if needed)

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Place a pan on your stove and heat and once hot, add the butter/oil
  • Add the onions and stir over a medium heat
  • Add the chili powder and stir in with the onions
  • Once the onions have softened stir in the tomato sauce
  • Now stir in the molasses (or sugar), cider vinegar and worcester sauce, basil, ginger, paprika and mustard powders
  • Once everything is nicely combined, add the lid, turn down the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes
  • After 15 minutes stir and taste and if needed add some salt
  • Finally, replace the lid and simmer for 5 more minutes, turn off the heat and it's ready

Store your homemade BBQ sauce in a sealed container in the fridge. Use within 4-5 days.

Salt Note: I added salt towards the end as some ketchup/sauces are saltier than others, so test and add as much as you need.

Thickening note: As you cook it will reduce slightly in volume, so if you prefer it thicker, just simmer for a bit longer, or, add a thickener like cornflour.

Why You Should Make Your Own...

Of course it's easy and convenient to pop to the store and pick up a jar of commercial sauce; but here's a few reasons to make your own...

  • Much more flavour than store-bought sauces that will be transferred to your grilled meat
  • You decide what is added. Not keen on a certain ingredient? Leave it out completely or just use another. So basically you can experiment and decide what is added not the manufacturer
  • No artificial colours, additives or preservatives. And If you're able to source organic ingredients your homemade barbecue sauce recipes will be free of pesticides and GMO's!
