What could be better than a homemade chili seasoning for adding huge flavours and mouthwatering aromas to your simmering home cooked chili or meaty stews? Using a tasty blend of dried cayenne peppers (or other variety) and spices and herbs, this is guaranteed to make your food stand out! (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my recipes)
Note: I used whole cayenne peppers and a few whole ingredients for this chili spice. If you can't get whole peppers you can use flakes or a plain old commercial powder. Note ll: You can also use pre-ground spices if you don't have whole. If you do just reduce the amount the recipe says by half. So, for 2 tablespoons of mustard seeds you use 1 tablespoon of mustard powder. Reduce any others you don't have whole by half as well and stir in with any other powders when making.
What You'll Need: (makes about 10-11 tablespoons)
1 cup dried cayenne peppers (or another variety)
OR 8 tbsp flakes
OR 4 tbsp chili powder
3 tbsp cumin seeds
2 tbsp mustard seeds
2 tbsp dried oregano
1 tbsp fenugreek seeds
1 tbsp black peppercorns
4 tsp dried basil
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp sea salt
tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon
Directions:
Store out of direct sunlight and in a cool place. Use within 3 months.
Note: If you used a pre-ground commercial powder, just add this with the garlic and onion after you've ground the other ingredients.
