If cooking clean and naturally is important to you, then creating an organic curry powder and other blends is probably something you may have considered. It's really easy to do, and basically is just using organic spices and herbs to make them with. (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my recipes)
Use as many organic ingredients as you can get hold of...
What You'll Need: (makes about 6-7 tablespoons)
3 tbsp coriander seeds
2 tbsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp whole peppercorns
1 tbsp paprika powder
2 tsp chili powder
2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp garlic powder
1-2 tsp sea salt
tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon
Directions:
Store your curry seasoning in a cool place in an airtight jar and out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months.
Note: You can dry toast the whole peppercorns, cumin and coriander seeds before cooling and grinding. This releases fabulous flavours, colours and aromas. See the grinding page for tips on this. (Link opens in new window)
Ingredient Note: Use whole spices where possible for the best aromas and flavours. If you haven't got them all, just use quality organic pre-ground powders, but reduce the amounts you use by half. So for 2 tablespoons of coriander seeds you use 1 tablespoon of pre-ground coriander. Reduce any other ingredients you don't have whole by half as well and stir in with any other powders when making.
If you ever have a look at the ingredients on the back of commercial spice blends and seasonings, you will often find all sorts of stuff you would prefer not to be there!
Artificial colours, preservatives and additives. And that's without the processed salt, husks and corn flour they add as a filler.
But make it yourself with your own chosen organic ingredients and you don't have any of these added extras.
