If you're going to the trouble to make delicious homemade meaty tacos, then I think it's worthwhile making your very own taco meat seasoning as this will add superb flavours and mouthwatering aromas! Below is a hot and spicy blend and one I'd use for my beef or chicken fillings. (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my homemade recipes)
What You'll Need: (makes about 8 tablespoons)
2
tbsp hot chili powder
2 tbsp cumin seeds
2 tbsp coriander seeds
1 tbsp hot Hungarian paprika
1 tbsp dried Mexican oregano
1 tbsp dried thyme
3 tsp garlic powder
3 tsp onion powder
2 tsp cayenne pepper
1-2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cinnamon powder
1 beef stock cube or 2 tsp beef bouillon
tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon
Directions:
Store your taco spice in an airtight jar out of sunlight. Use within 3 months before making a fresh amount.
Note: To add even more flavours to your homemade blend, dry toasting the cumin and coriander seeds before grinding and mixing with the other ingredients is something to consider. Click here to read more about this process. (Link opens in new window)
Ingredient Note: I use a couple of whole ingredients for this meat seasoning. However, if you don't have whole simply swap them for pre-ground powders and reduce the amounts by half. So instead of 2 tablespoons of whole cumin you use 1 tablespoon pre-ground cumin. Reduce the coriander likewise as well.
